Multiple Sclerosis and Chiropractic in Colorado Springs
WHAT IS MS?
Multiple Sclerosis, often called MS, in Colorado Springs is a neurological condition that affects the way in which messages are sent through nerve pathways in the body. There are more than 2.3 million people, worldwide, that have been diagnosed with this illness, and while there is still no cure, treatments have advanced greatly in the last decade.
Your body uses nerve pathways to send messages to perform consciously (walking, talking) and unconscious (breathing, blinking) operations. These transmissions are sent from your brain, through your spinal cord, out your peripheral nerves, and back again. These messages are sped up by layers of myelin sheath that are found all along the nerve axons. Along with helping to send signals through the nerve correctly, myelin also helps to protect and insulate the nerves. The immune system of those with MS attacks this myelin coating which leaves the nerves vulnerable and distorts the signal that is travelling down the nerve axon. When the nerves in the spinal cord and brain have lost myelin, the symptoms of MS begin to manifest.
FUN FACT: There are around 37 miles of nerves in the human body

NATURAL TREATMENTS FOR MS
Because there is currently no cure for the disease, treatments help to decrease or manage the symptoms of MS. Most MS flare-ups occur because of inflammation of the central nervous system (the brain, the brain stem, and the spinal cord). Managing this inflammation can help decrease the severity of symptoms, or help to increase the length of time between flare-ups.
- Herbs: Some herbs that have been shown to help reduce inflammation and boost the immune system are; Chinese hemp seed, barberry, ginkgo Biloba, myrrh, tumirik, as well as others.
- Vitamin D: Researchers and medical professionals have found a correlation between those with MS and low levels of vitamin D. Vitamin D can be absorbed through the skin from sunlight, or consumed in foods like fish and cheese. The connection between the vitamin and the disease is still not well known, but not only can a proper intake of the vitamin in those with MS help decrease symptoms, but Vitamin D might also prevent the diagnosis in the first place. According to the MayoClinic, the farther a person is from the equator, the more likely they are to develop MS.
- A visit to your Colorado Springs Chiropractor: Many people diagnosed with MS use chiropractic care to help manage their symptoms. Chiropractic adjustments have been shown to help reduce chronic pain that can be associated with some of the later phases of MS. Some individuals with MS can suffer from reduced mobility and lack of motor functioning. Taking additional pressure off of the central nervous system can help reduce the severity of these symptoms, and can allow the individual to better complete mobility and range-of-motion exercises recommended in therapy. Because many chiropractors focus on the nervous system, they can often help manage symptoms or flare-ups before they occur.
